Lesson Seventeen: Do Presentation to a Partner

Partner practice. How effective is your presentation at this stage? Getting a second opinion will help inform you what parts are effective & what parts need improving. In terms of preparation, your formal outline is close to complete. It states your thesis (belief) about your presentation topic with three (3) good reasons & relevant supporting details, including information from at least two (2) reliable sources. In addition, you have a minimum of three (3) visual aids. Furthermore, from Lesson Sixteen, you have a good understanding of how your presentation will scored.

1. Organise. Arrange a time and place to meet with a partner, who has agreed to view your presentation & give you their feedback.

2. Prepare. Go over what you want to say silently, in your head. Use your formal outline to help you remember what you want to say.

3. Practice Say your presentation aloud, from beginning to end.

4. Present. What is your presentation like at this stage? Ask your partner for their opinion. Have them listen to you & make notes on the following questions:

a. Does the thesis state what the presenter believes about his/her topic. Is his/her belief clear?

b. Do the ideas (reasons) clearly relate to the thesis (his/her belief)? YES NO. Why?

c. Is it interesting? In other words, is there sufficient supporting details (from sources)? YES NO. Why?

d. Was it between 5-7 minutes long?

5. Feedback time. Ask your partner to tell you honestly what they thought of your presentation at this stage. Ask them to include the four (4) points above in their evaluation.

6. Reflection time. Spend some time thinking about your presentation & your partner's evaluation of your practice presentation.

Presentation portfolio: Write a four-point evaluation of your presentation at this stage.

b. Knowledge: Was your information interesting?
Is there enough supporting detail from sources?

c. Organisation: Is your outline a complete summary of the content of your talk? What changes will you make to your formal outline to turn it into your final outline?

d. Assistance: Will you see a teacher during Office Hours this week? Why? Why not?

e. Next step: Based on your answers above, what work do you plan to do next?
